Originals, not previews

Reddit shows most images as resized copies from preview.redd.it. Bellevue loads the original from i.redd.it, on image pages and in galleries, so zooming in shows real detail.

Banners and profile pictures

Subreddit and profile banners are page backgrounds with no image menu. Bellevue gives them one, and opens banners and profile pictures uncropped, as they were uploaded.

Questions

Bellevue on Reddit

What is Bellevue?

Bellevue is a browser extension that replaces the browser's image viewer with smooth zoom, drag panning and rotation, and shows the original when you hover over a thumbnail. On Reddit it opens images and galleries in that viewer, full-screen and at the size they were uploaded.

Why is a Reddit image smaller than the upload?

Reddit's feed, posts and image page show resized copies from preview.redd.it. The upload is on i.redd.it, and Reddit's lightbox shows it once the post is open, fitted to the window or at actual size. Bellevue shows the i.redd.it original on the image page and in every lightbox, with smooth zoom past actual size. The Reddit guide covers getting it by hand, and does Reddit compress images measures what happens to the upload itself.

Can I see the original without opening the post?

Yes. Hold Alt over an image in the feed and hover zoom shows its i.redd.it original in a popup beside the cursor. Tap Ctrl instead to open it full-screen in the viewer, galleries included.

How does it compare with Reddit Enhancement Suite and Imagus?

Reddit Enhancement Suite expands images inline, but its store listing says it is built for old Reddit and most of it doesn't work on the redesign, and its site says it is in maintenance-only mode. Imagus is gone from the Chrome Web Store; Imagus Reborn and Hover Zoom+ show the i.redd.it original in a hover popup, and also play videos and page through galleries there. Bellevue works on Reddit as it is now: the original opens in its full-screen viewer on the image page and in every lightbox, galleries included, and in a popup while Alt is held, though the popup shows a video's thumbnail rather than playing it. The comparison tests the hover-zoom extensions on the same Reddit photos.

Which browsers does it work in?

Chrome, Microsoft Edge and Firefox, each from its own store: the Chrome Web Store, Edge Add-ons and Firefox Add-ons.

Is it free?

Yes, with every feature included and no paid version. If you agree on the page it opens after you install it, Bellevue shares the pages you visit with data partners. The privacy policy has the details.

The original, where the site keeps one.

Free for Chrome, Microsoft Edge and Firefox.
